MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum invites you to the film screening program Old Path in the Deep Dark Forest: The Plough and the Machine, the second screening program presented alongside the exhibition October 6th: a reconfigured archive, marking the 50th commemoration of the 6 October 1976 massacre to re-examine the traumatic wounds of Thai political history.

This film program serves as a journey back to 1973–1976 through two feature-length films created during that era. Functioning as historical records, these films reflect living conditions and class conflicts prior to the 6 October 1976 incident, while highlighting a class awakening and political collaboration that extended beyond student groups to encompass intellectuals, workers, and farmers.

MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum would like to express its gratitude to the Thai Film Archive for supporting the two films featured in this program.

Tongpan, 1976 (Paijong Laisakul, Surachai Chantimatorn, Euthana Mukdasanit, Rassami Paoluengtong, 62.19 min)

A film reflecting the ideas, ideologies, and class conflicts during 1973–1976 through the life of "Tongpan," an Isan farmer affected by the construction of the Lam Pao Dam. Created through a collaboration among students, intellectuals, and local villagers before several crew members were forced to flee into the jungle following the 6 October 1976 event, the film serves as both a social record and an archive preceding the tragedy.

Hara Factory Workers Struggle, 1975 (Jon Ungphakorn, 55.10 min)

A documentary capturing a key milestone in class consciousness and the strike of female workers at the Hara jeans garment factory. It portrays the power of worker self-management alongside support from the student movement. This documentary demonstrates that the struggle was not confined to university grounds, but unfolded alongside the lives of the working class.
